WHAT IS BOULDERING?

Bouldering is a style of climbing that happens relatively low to the ground without any harness or equipment. All you need are a pair of climbing shoes and some chalk for your hands, making the sport highly accessible to people of all ages! The walls are designed to keep the climbers no higher than 16 feet off the ground and all bouldering surfaces are surrounded by 16 inches of foam mats to protect the climber from a fall. Bouldering is a social sport, and we’re all about creating a supportive and encouraging environment here at Klimat! Lend a hand, offer up tips, cheer on your fellow climbers, but most of all, have fun!

WHY TRY BOULDERING?

Bouldering is a sport to fall in love with for several reasons.

  1. Anyone can give it a try…and we mean anyone! From toddler to grand folks alike, bouldering is super accessible to people of all ages.

  2. It’s a great workout! After a good bouldering session, all those little muscles you never knew you had will be aching ( litterally) for more!

  3. It’s intellectually challenging. Bouldering requires that you understand or figure out the problem. Each route is a bit like a puzzle, challenging the climber to dissect it piece by piece. What hold comes next? What hand do I use? What foot will propel me to the next hold? In what sequence do I move? Learning to “read” a problem comes with time, but you’ll figure it out!

  4. It’s simply just as ton of fun! Bouldering is intellectually and physically challenging, but it’s also a great way to truly enjoy your workout. The vibe is great, the people are awesome. Come as you are!

Youth of 8-13 are also welcome, with direct supervision from a parent on a 1:2 ratio. This age group will be permitted in the bouldering room only ( as was our regulation pre-covid ) and NOT permitted to use the fitness facility on the second floor.

Memberships are available for ages 14 +. Which gives access to Fitness + Bouldering.

Memberships are available for 13 and under that gives access to the bouldering room only.

DO I NEED TO WEAR CLIMBING SHOES?

Yes, climbing shoes are a must! It makes for a better bouldering experience and keeps our walls free from all that stuff you might bring in on the bottom of your runners. Who knows what lives under there!

We have shoe rental available for $5 / and 3$ for youth (13 and under)

WHERE DO I PARK?

If the parking spaces dedicated to the Klimat are full, please use our over-flow parking directly across the road at La Cuisine. Please DO NOT park in the parking lot beyond the gym. This parking is reserved exclusively for the guests of The Wakefield Grand.

HOW ABOUT A DAY PASS?

A Day Pass provides entry to the facility for the hours in which we are staffed.

Your Day Pass is valid for the entire duration of our staffed drop-in hours, therefore you may leave and come back without being charged twice.

WHAT IS A GRADING SYSTEM?

What’s on the wall is what counts here at Klimat. We have a passionate team of setters that are here to offer up some wicked routes and will keep the walls looking fresh! We want to provide enough variety in our problem setting to keep everyone happy, whether you’re a beginner to the sport, or a seasoned expert. With over 80 problems, thousands of holds and weekly re-set’s, Klimat’s walls will keep you coming back for more!

Klimat’s grading system is a progression from beginner to advanced. V0 being the entry level problems, V8+ being expert. Each problem will be marked with a tag indicating the grade.

WHAT IS A "PROBLEM" AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

A boulder problem is a defined route up a boulder or bouldering wall using a specific "sequence" of holds. Every problem has a start and a finish which will be marked out with coloured tape. The number of pieces of tapes per hold represent how many members of your body ( hands and/or feet ) are required to begin a problem. Two pieces of tape below or beside a hold means that you are required to start that problem with either two hands, two feet or a hand and foot. One piece of tape equals one hand or one foot, etc….it’s up to you to decide how to figure out the problem! A problem always finishes on a marked hold at the top of the wall, and is only completed by reaching the final hold by touching or holding it with both hands (or fingers) in a controlled fashion. Each problem will be distinguished by a full set of coloured holds, so follow that colour all the way to the top!
